Christian Costumes

Angel CostumeHalloween is a modern day festivity that has its origin in the Celtic period and is celebrated by Christians on the eve of the all Saints day. Costumes and mask are worn to placate the evil spirits or to ape them. Halloween became popular in the 19th century and what is unique about this festival is that both children and adults wear costumes depicting ghosts, monsters, devils, darkles or anything that depicts evil or morbid. The present day practice is to wear costumes of supper heroes, presidents or prominent personality. It seems that in the long run most of biblical characters have disappeared and what we have now are heroes and monsters that have nothing remotely associated with peace and serenity. Halloween is time to spread harmony, so why not dress in Christian costumes depicting Angels and Saints.

Jesus CostumeAngels and saints are close to God. Dressing as Angel Gabriel gives an opportunity to tell bible stories to our children and talking about goodness and miracles which were performed by them rather than the mad techno rush of the current day super heroes. Wearing christian costumes not just helps in telling stories but develops a deep sense of goodness in the neighborhood.

It is absolutely simple to coordinate a costume of Jesus. All it requires is a false beard, pair of sandal and robe worn in a roman style and a shepherd staff. Coordinating these simple things is definitely easy on the pockets and gives a sense of superiority among Jack the Rippers and Dracula. This might not be the “in” costume of the day, but with some reassurance children can wear them and go out to collect their tricks and treats.

Children can be dressed as angels with wings and infants as lamb. These Christian costumes are readily available on line and come in different sizes from infants to adult size. Grown ups and grandfathers can dress up as one the 3 wise Kings who traveled to Bethlehem to see the New Lord. As these costumes are very simple they can be made at home involving the entire family. The materials required would clean old white sheets to be made into a robe, a warm brown rug to wrap over the robe, pair of sandals with ropes to make it appear like Roman sandals and of course a crown and a staff.

Other Christian Costume options are Costume of the Pope, a nun, a priest or a pastor or a monk. This costume can be purchased online or in the local costume stores. When we can wear something depicting goodness why go for a costume which is against all Christian principles. They are many characters in the Bible which can be easily reproduced and gives an opportunity to learn or to tell the stories to the children, who in current situation have no time to learn or read any bible stories.

The first reaction to these costumes would be objection and ridicule from family and friends, but Halloween is too Pagan for children as it emulates something very violent and evil and forces the adults to reveal the stories behind these evil characters. Whereas Christian costumes can be fun and expose the children to goodness and peace. They can enter festivity of Halloween dressed in costumes which are angelic and holy. For parents who are worried about the pagan nature of this holiday, Halloween need not be negative as dressing in Christian costume will wipe away the negative and input some freshness and warmth on cold October 31st.
